Every point counts and Fruita Monument needed every single point. At their home dual, the Wildcats got just enough points to earns a 42-41 win over Central on Wednesday. With the match starting at 113, both teams knew there were forfeit points coming — at 195 and 220 for Fruita and 106 for Central — so every point was important. And that meant getting the six points that comes with a pin. Central's Dre Martinez spent most of two periods manipulating his opponent and coming close to getting a pin at 138 pounds, but the senior had to settle for a 16-0 technical fall, which is worth five points. That was the only non six-point win of the night. That win cut Fruita's lead to 18-17. The dual went back and forth from there. The 120-pound match featured a pair of ranked wrestlers and Fruita's Trea Fantin pinned Luke Pleasant in the first round. This is the third time Fantin has wrestled Pleasant this year. "We've gone back and forth, he beat me at the Warrior (Classic) and I beat him in Denver," Fantin said. "I knew I had to come out strong tonight." Fantin, who moved to Colorado from Wyoming, missed time with an illness but is now focused qualifying for the Class 5A state tournament. "I had to take some time off and wanted to take as much time off as I could because regionals is so close, and I want to be as healthy as I can," he said. "I feel like I'm back and ready to go." Fruita junior Jeremiah Williams had a dominating win over Paul Salazar at 160 pounds. Williams was coming off a competitive Thornton tournament where he placed third. The Wildcats have a tough stretch to end the season, but Williams said that's a good thing. "Coming off a tough tournament, I think it helps us because it shows us what regionals will be like, and that gets us more ready mentally and physically for a tough tournament," he said. "It shows us we can compete with some of the best teams in the state. "It's all about your mindset and believing that you can do it." Fruita's Mason Holsington had an impressive win at 182, pinning Stephen Roinestad in the second period. The win gave the Wildcats a 30-29 lead, and that was followed by the two forfeit victories for a 42-29 lead. Central's Israel Lima scored a pin for the Warriors at heavyweight to make the score 42-35, and a forfeit at 106 was the final six points for the Warriors. Central started the dual with a win at 113 with Davian Sandoval getting a second-period pin over Caleb Williams. Fruita got pins at 126 from Sullivan Sample and 132 from Hunter Riele to push the lead to 18-6.
