Running on a nice afternoon with temperatures in the low-50s, David Cardenas sprinted to the finish to win the Class 4A Region 1 boys title on Thursday.

Cardenas won in a time of 16 minutes, 54 seconds to beat Glenwood Springs' Henry Barth by just under five seconds.

Led by Cardenas' winning effort, the Warriors also claimed the team title with three runners in the top 11.


Central's Tyman Smart finished third in 17:29.1 and Jordan Leblow placed 11th with a time of 18:02.8.

The race scored the first five placers by each team and the Warriors also had Hunter Prather (18:29.1) in 24th and Jeffrey Fiantaca (18:42.3) in 33rd.

Central's 72 points gave them the team regional title over Battle Mountain at 84.

The race was held on the Willow Creek Golf Course in Eagle-Vail.


Palisade also competed in the Region 1 race and Shilo Trowbridge was the Bulldogs' best boys finisher in 55th with a time of 19:33.3.

In the girls race, Joslin Blair of Eagle Valley won the title with a time of 19:30.9, followed by Naomi Harding of Battle Mountain.

Battle Mountain had five runners in the top 11 to give them the girls team title.

Central freshman Tristan Spence placed 25th in 22:06.5 and Elizaeth Jones placed 57th in 23:24.9.


Hailey Langner was the best Palisade finisher in the girls race with a time of 23:13.9.

Sophomore Rebecca Hittle, who had a good regular season, finished 58th in 23:27.4.

In Class 5A, the Fruita Monument girls team turned in a great performance to place fourth as a team, which qualifies the Wildcats for the state meet.

Running at the Aurora Sports Park, freshman Jaydn Heil led Fruita Monument with a 12th-place finish in a time of 19:16.


Mekenzie Clark (19:43) finished 17th and Ashlynn Squires (20:01) was 22nd for the Wildcats.

Grand Junction also competed in the regional and Mandy Moran placed 25th at 20:08 with teammate Nina English (20:20) placing 31st, just ahead of Fruita's Kylee Quamberg (20:21)

Jenna Fitzsimmons of Mountain Vista won the race at 17:52.

In the boys race, Bryce Boggs placed 31st for Fruita in a time of 17:27, McGinley Zastrow (27:32) was 39th and Kien Cogley (17:43) 44th for the Wildcats.


Reece Fledderjohn was Grand Junction's best finisher in 58th at 18:12.

Valor Christian's Cole Sprout won the boys race in 15:16.

The Class 2A and 3A regionals are today.

The state cross country meet is Oct. 27 in Colorado Springs.
